Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan is a blonde-haired, blue eyed
woman with a lively personality. Her birth name is Margaret Mary Emily Hyra to
Susan (Duggan) and was the daughter of an English teacher, and once an actress.
Harry Hyra was a math teacher. She has Ruthenian, Polish, Irish, and German
roots. ("Hyra" is a Ruthenian surname, while "Ryan" is her
maternal grandmother's maiden name). Meg was graduated in June 1979 Bethel high
school, Bethel. Meg moved to New York and majored as journalist at New York University.
In order to earn money while working on her degree, Meg went into acting under
her new name Meg Ryan. She made her screen debut in 1981, with a brief
appearance as Candice Bergen’s daughter in George Cukor’s final film Rich and
Famous (1981). She was a test subject and was selected to play Betsy in the day
time soap As the World Turns (1956). From 1982 to 1984, she was a part of the
ensemble. Meg was also a part of the TV show One of the Boys (1982) but it was
swiftly cancelled. In 1984, she moved to a tinsel town, and got a job in the
western TV series Wildside (1985). Meg had a small role in Top Gun (1986),
later being part of Steven Spielberg's Innerspace (1987) in which she starred
with Dennis Quaid. In the remake of D.O.A., she starred again with Dennis
Quaid. (1988) and then got married on Saint Valentine's Day 1991. Meg appeared
in 1989's When Harry Met Sally... (1989), and the scene in the restaurant
became famous. Meg was nominated for both the Golden Globe and the BAFTA. In
1990, she co-starred with Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) and this
time she played three roles as DeDe/Angelica/Patricia. She starred with Tom in
the critically acclaimed Sleepless in Seattle (1993) for which she was
nominated for the Golden Globe. In 1994, Meg decided to act contrary to the
norm when she acted as an alcoholic spouse and mother in When a Man Loves a
Woman (1994). She returned to being "cute" following the film's
release with I.Q. (1994) and French Kiss (1996). People Magazine named Meg
"Woman of the Year" in 1994, and she was awarded the Harvard Hasty
Pudding Award.
